I think the main point of your demonstration, was to confuse us and challenge our minds. What I mean by that is that we all came in with our ideas or theories of the laws in which we previously knew, and by our own standards the balloon ought to have popped. But because it didn't it shows us that sure, we may know the law, but what we didn't know was how easily the law can be redefined when the variable used is changed. It shows us that we need to broaden our perspective of physics and to answer with confidence, whether we are wrong or right, we just need to think...
The point of the Balloon Kabob demo was to show us that that a theory can be disproved easily by simply substituting (in this case)a pin with a kabob (both of which are sharp).
When I saw the kabob I thought it would pop the balloon easily as with movement it should have pierced right through the balloon. However, that was not the theorem we made up, which stated that "if you take a sharp object to a balloon it will pop". When you put the kabob to the balloon you placed it on and applied force over time and the balloon did not pop.
This showed me that when scientists want to come up with a new theory, they need to test every possible variable that could be used in the theory or else it does not hold true. I can now see why scientists have a hard time proving something even as basic as gravity.
The point of the demonstration was to explain how easily the laws we thought we knew can be changed. This also applies to the nature of science because it shows that any change of variables can change everything about an experiment. In the demo it was the pin and the kabob stick. The demo taught us that scientists must think about every possible combination of variables before declaring something a law, or before making conclusions about an experiment.
This expairement showed us how we have to be careful with our words in science. since we did not say anything about the amount of pressure needed it was possible to peirce the baloon without poping it. Scientists have to perfect their theory and think of all possible variables and modifications before it can be legitimate.
I think that the point of this demo was to show 1. How a hypothesis can be generated from past experiences, 2. The ways to test the hypothesis, and 3. How a hypothesis needs to then tested in order to prove it wrong and make it more precise if it needs to be.
It was a way of saying that even if it seems like a right answer is evident immideately a smiple flaw can prove it wrong.
I believe that the point of this demo was to prove to us that no matter how much a theory can be proven true by multiple experiments, there is still the chance that it can be proven wrong. Also to prove that detail is crucial, seeing as how the theory that was brought up by Frank was that if you bring a balloon to a sharp object, it will pop. Even though the kabob-stick was a sharp object, the balloon failed to pop until the stick was completely through.
I think that the balloon kabob showed how in science, even an observation that is frequently the same can change results after enough testing. Since the average person would assume a sharp object like the kabob would easily pop the balloon, just about everyone thought it would pop (myself included). To our suprise though, the point of the kabob was pushed against the wall of the balloon, and penetrated it without it popping. It eventually did pop, but the prediction was that it would pop instantly. It only shows that in science, there is rarely an absolute, and if proven wrong once, a "law" or "rule" looses all it's meaning.
I believe that the point of the balloon kabob was to try to force us to think as scientists instead of students. We have to be able to try every possible process before a hypothesis, law or conclusion can be confirmed.
Even changing the device used to pop the balloon changed the entire result and forced the class to reconsider all of our previously accepted ideas.
I think that the point of the balloon kabob was to show us how easily an experiment can vary just by changing something like the amount of force needed. We all thought that the pin and the screw would pop the balloon and the nail wouldn't; when in reality if you differ the effort put into those objects they could all inevitably pop the balloon. This showed us that we need to pay close attention to details like this otherwise we may completely misinterpret the task at hand.
I think that the main point of the experiment was to show us that there are multiple factors that affect the laws of physics. There are many things you need to think about before you make an hypothesis. For instance with the baloon, you had to think about not only weather or not the object was sharp. YOu had to think about the size of the object, and much fore or pressure is required to actually burst the baloon. Also the amount of air that is inside of the baloon.
I think the point of this demonstration was to show us that you can't always just think about the obvious. Its so easy to just think that sharp object plus balloon equals POP. Sometimes it gets easy to just disregard something simple as the force needed to pop the balloon.
I assumed that the kabob would pop the balloon easily but i was being oblivious to the forces needed. I think this was very benificial to my physics knowledge.
The Balloon Kabob demo was intended to show us how scientific laws work. The class agreed on a law that states "When a sharp object pokes a balloon it will pop". This law was proven with the pin and thumbtack. When it was time to try the kabob the entire class 'knew' it would pop the balloon. However the kabob punctured the balloon without popping it,disproving the original law. This example showed the class that in order for a scientific law to be true it must be true in EVERY instance. Scientists cannot jump to conclusions without experimenting , even if the law seems obvious such as the balloon example.
The point of the demo was to make us think like scientists. It made us think of the possible outcomes of the balloon (if it would pop or not) with objects that we already knew would work and ones we hadn't yet tried personally. Scientists are try to disprove laws and that is what you were telling us. Scientists have to try all kinds of experiments in order to disprove just one law. This exemplified the nature of science by using question and experimenting to find what would happen to the balloon.
I think that the point of the Balloon Kabob demonstration was to show how precise you have to be in science. Since the level/amount of pressure that was needed to pop the balloon was not indicated, the balloon could be poked and not popped.
I think the purpose of the Balloon Kabob demonstration was to remind us that theories are just that..only theories. So just because a pin or a tack could pop the balloon, it doesn't necessarily prove that a larger but still sharp object will similarily pop the balloon. I think the demonstration was meant to get our minds moving and thinking and to use our heads in ways that will prepare us for the rest of the year in Physics. In addition, it showed me that science is not all about laws and theories, its also about using your head and thinking about the logical answer or reasoning that could help solve a problem. Variables are a huge part of science and the art of formulating a law or theory. This demonstration was related to the nature of science by the various variables that were used. If the variables are changed, like using a pin or a kabob stick, it redefines the whole experiment or problem. This demonstration taught me that scientists must constantly look for another way the problem could be approached and therefore formulate a law by the results they got from their experiment.
I think that the point of the demo was to show us that we can’t predict what might happen. This demo showed this because we believed that the stick would pop the balloon but that didn’t happen. This shows that things can happen that you don’t expect. This taught me that you have to remember to expect the unexpected in science.
I think that the main goal of the balloon Kabob was to teach us not to make assumptions, and to pay attention to detail. You started off by showing us two very sharp things. Two things that we knew would pop the balloon easily. You then showed us a very long tooth pick. You asked us if it would pop the balloon if you poked the balloon with it. Most of the class said that yes the balloon would pop, but we forgot about the variable of force. You merely touched the balloon so it did not pop. This activity showed us that when making a scientific prediction you must take all variables into account.
I think that the main point of the Balloon Kabob demo was to test and form our understanding of physics and common sense. The demo portrayed the laws of gravity and proved that when you poke a balloon with something sharp and pointy it will pop. The demo tested our minds because when the "poking object" was changed there was a change that the outcome of the balloon would change. It taught us to be open to change and that being wrong is okay because you will learn from your mistake afterwards. Second guessing yourself is not the way to go, rather you should be confident with your answer even if it may be wrong in the end. Physics is all around us and is a pool of knowledge that we need to take in and learn from.
The main point of the demonstration was to show us why not to jump to conclusions and that things can change. We have to be open-minded to change and not be surprised when something in an experiment changes. The demo also showed us how to go about the scientific process.
I think that the balloon kabob demo was a way to prove physics can be involved in something simple such as a balloon. Also, that a theory can be changed just by using different materials within the experiment. This demo proved that in order for something to become factual, you must do the demo over and over again to really make sure that it can not be disproven.
The demonstration showed that even the gut instinct we hold in our mind could be very wrong. The balloon popped easily after meeting the tac, but when the kabob met the ballon, the air held strong, and a seal was formed. This shows that we should not assume something after example, and we should also realize that there can be many exceptions to a theory/law.
